HOW WE GOT INVOLVED

Following multiple successful collaborations with Barnfield Construction, we were appointed to deliver civil and structural engineering services for a new 41,650 sq ft industrial building, associated car parking and a service yard in Darwen. The facility will accommodate a local aerospace company, supporting 100 existing jobs and enabling up to 60 additional roles for the local community.

WHAT WE DID

The development occupies a former Victorian mill site with complex site levels. To address the varied topography we designed retaining walls and sloped embankments and completed a detailed cut-and-fill analysis to optimise final ground levels. The earthworks strategy avoided sending material to landfill. An additional constraint was the site’s location within Flood Zone 3, so we assessed and incorporated on-site flood volume storage measures to manage flood risk and meet regulatory requirements.

WHY WE’RE PROUD OF IT

Redeveloping the former mill into usable employment space while protecting the local area from flooding represents a successful, sustainable outcome that benefits the community and environment.
